Privacy at NeighborLink
NeighborLink is designed to help neighbors connect while limiting unnecessary sharing of personal information.
Our Privacy Approach
1. Information We Collect
When you create or use a NeighborLink account, we may collect information you provide directly, including:
- Your first and last name.
- Your email address.
- Your phone number, if provided.
- Account and login information.
- Communities you join or request to join.
- Help requests you create.
- Volunteer responses and service activity.
- Messages sent through NeighborLink.
- Community membership and verification information maintained by community administrators.
NeighborLink should not be used to store or exchange highly sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, credit card information, passwords, or detailed medical records.
2. How We Use Your Information
Information collected through NeighborLink is used to operate the community-help service, including to:
- Create and manage your account.
- Help you join communities.
- Allow you to request or offer help.
- Connect requesters with volunteers.
- Allow users to communicate through NeighborLink.
- Notify users about help requests, volunteer offers, messages, and community activity.
- Track confirmed volunteer service hours.
- Allow authorized community administrators to manage membership and community verification.
- Maintain security, prevent misuse, and support the operation of the service.
3. What Other Users Can See
NeighborLink is intended to share only the information reasonably needed for community interaction.
Before Help Is Accepted
Other members may see information associated with a help request, such as the requester's name, community, help category, request description, requested date, and general scheduling information.
Private contact information and exact home address information are not intended to be publicly displayed.
After Help Is Accepted
NeighborLink may reveal limited contact information necessary for the requester and accepted volunteer to coordinate the service.
For example, an accepted volunteer may receive the requester's phone number and, when necessary for the help request, the exact service location.
The requester may receive contact information for the accepted volunteer. A volunteer's home address is not shared simply because they volunteered.
4. Communities and Community Administrators
NeighborLink allows users to participate in communities such as neighborhoods, churches, schools, senior centers, nonprofit groups, and other local organizations.
Community administrators may be able to see information necessary to manage their community, including membership requests, member names, join-request messages, volunteer activity, and community verification information.
Verification information is community-specific. Being verified in one community does not automatically verify a user in another community.
5. Messages
Messages sent through NeighborLink are stored so participants can view their conversations and coordinate community help.
Messages are not intended as public posts. However, users should avoid sending highly sensitive personal, medical, financial, or authentication information through the messaging system.
6. Volunteer Service Records
NeighborLink may record volunteer service activity, including the volunteer's name, community, activity, date, minutes or hours served, and confirmation by the person who received help.
Authorized community administrators may use these records to prepare volunteer-hours reports or printable service-verification documents.
A NeighborLink service record documents activity recorded through the platform. It is not a background check, employment reference, or endorsement by NeighborLink.
7. Sharing of Personal Information
NeighborLink is a community-focused, nonprofit-oriented project. Personal information is used to operate the service and support community-help activities.
NeighborLink does not intend to sell users' personal information for advertising or marketing purposes.
Information may be disclosed when reasonably necessary to operate the service, protect users or the platform, comply with applicable law, or respond to a valid legal requirement.
8. Account and Data Security
NeighborLink uses account authentication and access controls intended to limit access to private information.
Users are responsible for protecting their account credentials and should not share their password with other people.
No website or computer system can guarantee absolute security. Users should avoid placing unnecessary sensitive information in help requests or messages.
9. Children and Student Volunteers
Communities may include schools, churches, youth groups, or students participating in volunteer activities.
Community administrators are responsible for following the policies of their organization when managing minors or student volunteers.
Users should not include unnecessary information about children in public help requests, membership messages, or conversations.
10. Updating or Removing Information
NeighborLink may provide account and community management tools that allow information to be updated as the service develops.
If you need assistance correcting or removing information associated with your account, contact the NeighborLink administrator.
NeighborLink Is Not an Emergency Service
Do not use NeighborLink to report an immediate threat, medical emergency, fire, or crime in progress. In the United States, call 911 for emergencies.
11. Changes to This Privacy Notice
NeighborLink may update this Privacy Notice as features and community services change. Updated information will be posted on this page.
